1889, an 18xx game in the series created by Francis Tresham’s 1829, is set on Shikoku, Japan. The rules are similar to those of 1830: Railways & Robber Barons but with a smaller map full of terrain.
In 1889, 2-6 players use money to buy shares in railway companies during stock rounds. Between these rounds, the railway companies conduct operations on the game board, with decisions made by the player who is the principal owner. The game simulates the development of railway construction during a historical period on Shikoku. Old trains become obsolete while revenue from cities increases over time. Players try to buy the most profitable shares at the right time to maximize income from dividends and stock value increases. Ultimately, the player with the highest value in their personal cash and held shares wins.
