History:

Pets are companion animals. Humans have kept animals as companions for over 12,000 years, when its believed the first dogs were domesticated. Though keeping pets was once considered something only rich elite people did, these days pets can be found amongst all walks of life.

While the most commonly kept pets are dogs and cats, many other animals are found as companion animals, including fish (both salt and fresh water varieities), reptiles and amphibians (including snakes, lizards and frogs) and insects and arachnids including ants, spiders and scorpions. Many mammals other than dogs and cats are also kept as pets including horses, rabbits, pigs, guinea pigs, ferrets, and much more.
